Statement of Intent

Here is my teams statement of intent.

Reflection:
I was absent during the lesson that my group started the statement of intent, so it was very stressful on them. To catch up, we divided every section to different people to make this task easier. Everyone was responsible for getting their part done. After our statement of intent was completed, it helped us prepare for our video a lot more. We had set plans for what we were going to do and put our ideas into words.

Classwork: Editing

HThis blog contains classwork on editing. Tisha, Kimora and I completed this.

We were given a group task in class to edit our "Regents fun run" footage to the beat of our song choice. I was paired up with Tisha and Kimora. Kim and I were in charge of going through a google drive with thousands of footage, and pick the ones we thought would work best. Tisha was our editor. We all worked together to complete this.

Classwork | Cut to the beat

Reflection:
This task was pretty easy to complete. It gave Tisha some practice on editing before editing our music video, which was helpful. The only downside is that Cassie wasn't with us, so the opportunity to try work as a team for the first time wasn't possible.

Pre-production: Genre Research

This blogpost contains genre research during pre-production.

Genre Research - Kellie Collins

Reflection
This task was very time consuming, and I had a few moments where I got very frustrated being unable to finish it before the deadline, but it was helpful. It helped me understand conventions that go specifically into RnB. I had a rough idea of what the genre looked like but this task helped me solidify my thoughts. I now have a clearer picture of what I want our music video to look like.

Preliminary Research by Kellie Joy Collins

Reflection:
Doing this research helped my group and I a lot, because we were unsure of what genre suited us best. Now that we understand what conventions go into each genre more, we know what would be easiest for our group to recreate. We also got a lot of inspiration and ideas from watching the videos that we might include in ours.

Reflection:
Since I joined media in grade 11, I missed out on learning the basics on production. Having to catch up on all of the different camera angles and technical elements was a bit of a challenge, but with my group's help, I was able to complete this task.

Reflection:
I'm very excited to work with my new team. As soon as we got into our groups and started talking about our plans and visions, my whole group was in sync. All of our ideas aligned, so we were really happy and motivated to get started.

Week 1

This week we were given our brief for our comp 3 project. This made me very excited because I'm very happy with my new group. We also started and completed our preliminary research, further preparing us to start our work.

Problems: The only problem we had this week was agreeing upon a genre in our group. We all had so many ideas that we wanted to do and had some trouble just choosing one.

Solutions: We all stuck to a genre we often listen to and know most about, so we chose R&B. We all felt as if this was a very diverse genre as well, since there are so many different styles of R&B.

To Do: Before our next lesson, I want to expand on my preliminary research and start my genre research.

Week 2

This week we continued our genre research. We also had to decided on what song we were going to use for our music video. We narrowed it down to three and kept discussing about it until we landed on 1. Lastly, we learnt more about media ecology.

Problems: My group and I were stressing about getting all of our research done in time, since there was quite a lot to do and expand on.

Solutions: We all kept reminding each other to stay on task to finish as much as we could each day.

To Do: Complete research to prepare for storyboard next week.

Week 3

This week we continued our genre research since it was still unfinished. We also began to search for ideas to do in our music video. We looked at different conventions we liked and wanted to include in our project. This was really good for my group because our communication helped us to get on the same page. Tisha also started working on our storyboard.

Problems: This week was a very busy week for everyone. Since Tisha was the only person that could do the best job for our storyboard, she was a bit slow in completing it.

Solutions: Everyone in the group tried to help with the storyboard as much as possible, by giving out ideas and proposing different ways to draw each box.

To Do: Complete genre research and continue storyboard.

Week 4

This week we started our statement of intent, better preparing us to start our music video because we were able to layout our plans. Seeing all of our ideas on one page helped us determine whether it was all possible to do, and if it was suitable to our goal. We also dove deeper into our artist to see what we wanted her persona to be like. Tisha also found an app to help her complete her storyboard, called ShotStager. This saved lots of time.

Problems: The only problem we faced this week was that I was away for a day, so I had a bit of catching up to do.

Solutions: My group helped me get up to date with all of the work, and I was able to catch up again.

To Do: Complete storyboard on ShotStager.

Week 5

This week we learnt about artist persona and started the process of creating ours. We also searched for locations to film our video in, and eliminated the ones that were too far for our group.

Problems: There were many locations that would've been really good for our video, but it was too difficult to get to for our group, so we had to get rid of them.

Solutions: Instead of giving up on the locations, we decided to find alternatives that were similar and had the same aesthetic.

To Do: Continue finding locations for our music video.

Week 6

This week we completed our mood board which helped us visualize the aesthetic of our artist. This made the process of preparing the mise-en-scene for shooting. We also finished our storyboard and location scout. Since we had to finish shooting before school started again after term break, we began doing this during our internships.

Problems: The deadlines were very short to complete our blogposts, so my group and I were very stressed in getting them done in time. I'm also away during the whole term break so we won't be able to film anything during that time.

Solutions: We spent as much time as we could after school to do our blogposts everyday. Since this was during our internships, we were very busy but we managed to also start filming. We got almost everything completed before I had to leave to Australia.

To Do: Complete shooting.

1st semester reflection:

Pre production went very smoothly with the group that I have. We successfully split different tasks to one another and since we were all very excited about our ideas. We did face a few problems like time management; getting things done before deadlines and planning our schedule for filming since some people will be away. To fix this, we just kept our communication skills strong and worked around the issues.

Recap during break:

During break, I was unable to edit my blogposts or do any filming with my group, as I was in Australia with my family. Whilst I was gone, Tisha started editing the footage that we already had which was very useful to get started for next semester. Since our video included lots of point of view shots of me, I was able to film a few clips in Australia, with my sisters help.

Problems: After filming, I tried to put the footage into our groups shared google drive, but I was unable to since I didn't have my laptop. This means I had to wait until I was with Tisha again so I could airdrop the footage to her, so the quality stayed the same.

Solutions: Tisha continued editing other footage while waiting for mine, so it didn't turn out to be much of a problem anyways.

To Do: Continue filming and editing.

Week 1:

This week we learnt about persona and brand identity of an artist/celebrity. This helped us understand how to create our artists off screen persona because this project also requires us to make an Instagram page for our celebrity. We also learnt about theory of stardom, which taught us that celebrities images are carefully constructed, nothing is an accident. We did more research on everything we learnt and turned them into classwork for our blogs.

Problems: I was still away in Australia for this whole week, so I missed out on a lot of work. I was very lost coming back into the project because I missed some important lessons.

Solutions: I got lots of help from my group when I got back and I was able to use their blogposts for examples on how to make mine.

To Do: Complete missing classwork blogposts.

Week 2:

This week, we started asking people for feedback on some of the footage we had edited so far. This was very useful because their input made our video better. Since I arrived this week, we were also able to film more footage, or reshoot anything that we wanted to improve.

Problems: We didn't have any problems this week other than rushing a little bit to film footage because most of the time, we were only able to film after school.

Solutions: We decided to come together as a group and go to different locations right after school to be sufficient with time. This required us to bring different objects and clothes to school.

To Do: Put feedback into blogpost and continue filming.

Week 3:

This week we learnt about audience theory and fan theory. This helped us understand how we should present our artist social media page. This week was also the deadline for our audience feedback, so we completed that blogpost. Our group continued to film after school.

Problems: With our male actor being in a different school that finishes at a different time, it was hard to be on time to film. This made us lose lighting some days, miss sunsets, etc. We were all also tired from previously being in classes.

Solutions: Our group tried to make it as fun as possible by keeping positive energy, stopping for food and drinks when needed, and we just worked around the things we missed like lighting in the locations. This also gave us a chance to add more information to our blogposts, so it became a positive.

To Do: Create artist Instagram and continue filming.

Week 4:

This week, we finalized our filming since our deadline for the video was getting very close. We also kept our artist active on Instagram, posting photos and short videos. Since we wanted nice pictures for our artist to post, we went to a studio to take professional photos. Tisha continued editing our video, while the rest of the group worked on blogposts.

Problems: Since the deadline was getting very close, our group started to get worried because we still have a few blogposts to complete.

Solutions: We have time after school every day  to complete parts of our blogposts since we're done filming, so we will be able to get it done in time.

To Do: Complete blogposts.

Reflection:

The post production stage with my group went very smoothly. We all equally helped one another and made sure all tasks got done before the deadline successfully. Our communication skills were very strong, we all motivated each other throughout the project, and in the end, it was very fun to do. I've learnt a lot of new skills being with my group and I'm content with how our music video turned out.
